So while the divorce rate among Catholics has merely doubled in twenty years, the rate of annulments has increased by over 15,000 percent. While "annulment-on-demand" may reflect pastoral sensitivity, many find this gap between what the church says and what it does deceitful, hypocritical, scandalous and bordering on casuistry of the worst kind.

In this book, theologians, historians, and sociologists overhaul the church's teaching and practice on divorce and remarriage Edward Schillebeeckx contributes two lengthy chapters, which have never appeared in English before; other contributors include Archbishop Peter L
