Summary

Speech codes that protect intended victims by prohibiting religious, ethnic, racist, and sexist epithets have become common on college campuses. The editors examine a wide array of judicial opinions in relevant cases, and then present a group of original case studies of recent attempts to handle incidents of hate speech at both public and private universities. The volume concludes with commentary on the issue by an ideologically diverse group of writers. This collection reveals that the problem has no easy solution, and challenges the reader to grapple with the many questions raised by the increasing prevalence of hate speech.
